Get to Know Mr. Hackbarth:
During the 2022-23 school year, Zack Hackbarth will be in his eighth year at Gilbert High School, currently teaching 9th-grade English, 12th-grade DMACC English, and dramatic arts courses. A native of Ames, he graduated from Iowa State University in 2015 with a B.A. in English including minors in Performing Arts and Classical Studies. In 2022, he earned his M.Ed. in Learning, Teaching, and Curriculum with an emphasis in English education through the University of Missouri.
Mr. Hackbarth also sponsors the Thespian Society at Gilbert High School, directs the school's fall musical and spring play, coaches speech for students participating in IHSSA competitions, and facilitates the OnStage program partnership with Iowa State. He discovered an interest in the performing arts during his freshman year of high school and went on to act in six mainstage productions at Iowa State as well as other performances throughout the area. In 2013 and 2014, he directed children's theatre productions for Nevada's Winterfest celebration. At Gilbert High, he has directed The Monologue Show, The Sound of Music, and All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten.
He and his wife Emily got married in December 2016 and currently live in Ames with their cat, Maple.
