Grade 9 1st and 2nd semester 1 credit/semester Required of all freshmen
This course is an introduction to the study of reading, writing, speaking, and listening as found in the Iowa Core Curriculum. Units for the course are divided into thematic segments, including topics like identity, personality, society/structure, social issues, and coming of age. Course content focuses on practicing skills in several different genres of speech and writing, including narrative, argumentative, and informative. Literature units on the reading of novels, short stories, poetry, and drama are included, as well as a focus on independent reading and writing for enjoyment and strengthening skills in both areas. An introduction to formal citing and formatting is stressed in relationship with the writing and research process.
