Introduction to Speech & Acting
Grades 9-12 1st Semester 1 credit
Introduction to Speech & Acting is a foundational theatrical arts course progressing from ensemble building games and activities at the start of the year to group-based acting and speaking performances. Topics may include solo and ensemble acting, improvisational acting, mime, interpretive prose and poetry, musical theatre, storytelling, reviewing, and original oratory. Acting pieces will focus on developing characters and workshopping scenes, monologues, and audition material. The course is designed to mirror performance categories from the Iowa High School Speech Association (IHSSA), which holds contests from January-March each year. Students are encouraged to participate in IHSSA events at the conclusion of this course and throughout the remainder of their high school careers. This course is offered for elective credit.
